2. Less chemicals – While there is research that says breast cancer and other diseases are not caused by birth control, I just don’t like the idea of so many foreign chemicals entering my body and changing my natural cycle. It seems like women have cycles for a reason, so stopping it from happening altogether was not something I was looking for.
3. Gets me in tune with my body – By forcing myself to learn about my cycle, I now feel a lot more in tune to my body. I feel like women’s health and sexual organs are pretty taboo topics still, so using a natural form of birth control has allowed me to learn a lot about how amazing our bodies are. 🙂
4. Allows my cycle to stay the way that it is – My cycle is pretty long compared to the average one, so getting on a medical form of birth control would force my body to change into what the “typical” cycle should be (ex. the Pill). Choosing a natural route allowed me to monitor my own, unique cycle without conforming to what (mainly male) scientists think my cycle should be (or stopping it altogether).
5. It’s free (but time consuming to learn) – While it does save money, I argue that the money I save using natural birth control is replaced by the cost of the time it takes to actually learn how to successfully use natural birth control. When you have something inserted inside your uterus or arm or take a pill everyday you don’t have to think about it at all. Using natural birth control the correct way definitely requires some learning, which makes it a more rewarding system!
6. Makes it a “we” problem instead of a “you” problem – I have a whole post coming up in the next month or so where I will be talking about how unfair I think birth control in our society is… I think natural forms of birth control levels the playing field by making you AND your partner responsible for the consequences of your actions. In my case, my temperature signals when I can or cannot engage in any sexual activity, so my partner is able to understand when things can get heated and when they cannot. A lot of natural methods require tracking that be done by both partners, which shifts the responsibility from being just a women’s health issue.
7. They can be just as effective as other birth control methods! – While most people think natural forms of birth control are ineffective, done correctly this is just not the case! For me, I am willing to put the full responsibility of my actions while allowing my body to not be affected by any outside chemicals, which is why I chose the Basal Body Temperature method.

Honestly, the idea of natural birth control is not something I ever considered. So I think it is wonderful that you are posting about this topic! And I fully agree with you that as a society, birth control is unfair. It puts all of the burden on the woman and makes it her responsibility, even though it takes two to tango!

Re: "less chemicals"… that kind of language creates an atmosphere of fear around most anything and is extremely vague. Literally EVERYTHING has chemicals and "chemicals" aren't at war with anything "natural," more often than not, they're one in the same. And I have a coil and although it has stopped my cycle now aside from a bit of blotting, it's totally reversible.

It is okay that you chose the natural route. I am too – less work and at the end of the day, we can choose what we want to do with our bodies. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I chose the natural route too. I think we should be able to decide on what we put into our bodies and there's so much pressure on the woman to be responsible for birth control.
I am so glad you are enjoying my birth control posts 🙂 Thanks so much!

Honestly, the only natural birth control that I knew about before this was ‘being ugly’.
I’m on the pill, but luckily I don’t have any side effects. In fact, it helped a lot to regulate my hormones – they were all over the place. However, I know a lot of conventional birth control methods have terrible side effects for a lot of women, so I think this is something a lot more people can consider.

I would definitely check out more info on the Basal Body Temperature and Cervical Mucus methods if you are interested! Glad you learned something new 😀
