Recent Reads & Movie Reviews 🎬

Hey cupcakes! You all seemed to really love my last Reads & Movie Review post, so I thought I would share my thoughts on the books and films that I have recently read/watched. As I am officially done with school for the summer, I have had a lot more time to read and watch things... So definitely  look forward to more of these posts in the future! 😃

~The Last Job: The “Bad Grandpas” and the Hatton Garden Heist by Dan Bilefsky

In one of my book review posts from January, I talked about a random book I found at my local library about a college guy who stole a bunch of dead birds from a museum. I thought it was quite interesting, so (of course) I just had to get another heist book. This one focuses on the Hatton Garden Heist where a group of 60 and 70 year olds used a diamond tip drill to cut through 20 inches of concrete. Sounds like a movie right? Well, it actually did inspire three! 😂 This was such an interesting book, and I just cannot believe the craziness of this robbery (which includes a sleeping look out, a security guard literally showing up when the heist took place, and giving up but then returning a day later). If the "Bad Grandpas" had done this crime in 1980 they would have never been caught!

~Trainwreck: The Women We Love to Hate, Mock, and Fear... and Why by Sady Doyle

This book focuses on the "trainwrecks" we all know about from the media - examples like Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, etc. Doyle does an excellent job of comparing these women to the male "trainwrecks" who are never as negatively affected or ridiculed by society. It definitely made me think about the unfair expectations that women celebrities have forced on them, so I would recommend reading if you are into feminist literature!

~Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

Gilbert is most known for her book Eat, Pray, Love (which I have yet to read haha), and in this book she shares her ideas about creativity. One of the interesting things she talked about was how ideas wander around (sort of like ghosts) until they find the right person to express them... I thought this was such a romantic way to put it! For anyone who is looking to lead a more creative life, I think Gilbert has a great way of basically telling the reader that everyone is creative in their own way. 😊

~Are u ok?: How to Know You Need Help and Where to Find It by Kati Morton

Knowing how to handle your mental health is something that I have learned throughout college to be of the upmost importance. One of my close friends was struggling to deal with depression recently, so I gave this book a read to try and help them out. Morton does an excellent job of debunking the misconceptions about mental health and therapy while describing all of the steps you can do (both by yourself and at therapy) to make sure you are at your best. She does an excellent job of breaking down medical terms, and I think it is super helpful for anyone struggling with a mental health issues. ♥

I am pretty sure that you all know how much I love animated movies, so of course I enjoyed Sing! I was actually amazed by the all-star cast for this film, which makes the singing portions so much more enjoyable. I laughed a lot (especially during the auditions scene because who doesn't love a good audition montage like High School Musical or Pitch Perfect?!), so I can definitely say that this was a feel-good family movie. 😂 Give it a watch if you need a pick me up!
